Profit per mile: why the biggest load on the board lies to you

We own the trucks, so when a load math mistake happens, we pay for it in our own diesel. Here's the per-mile arithmetic we run on every combination before it touches our board — the same math most dispatchers skip because it doesn't pay THEM.

Gross is the billboard; net per day is the bank account

Take two loads: $4,500 with 400 deadhead miles, a layover-prone route, and a unit that eats your best deck position — versus $3,200 loading twenty minutes from your last drop on a corridor you can reload out of same-day. Every load board, and every gross-paid dispatcher, points you at the first one. Run fuel (a loaded 9-car burns serious money per mile), deadhead (same diesel, zero revenue), and fixed daily costs across realistic HOS days — not map days — and the second load frequently nets more per day. Per-day net is the only number that pays your truck note.

The number nobody prices: where you land

A load’s last drop sets the price of your next three days. A big-gross run that strands you in a market with nothing outbound sells your week cheap; a modest load that lands you in a hot reload market is quietly worth hundreds more than its rate. We sequence combinations on our own trucks with the reload in the plan before the first car is strapped — gross per mile only counts when the miles keep coming.

Why the incentive problem is structural

A dispatcher paid on gross gets paid more for the $4,500 mistake than the $3,200 right answer — every time, by design. That’s not a character flaw; it’s the fee structure doing what fee structures do. It’s also why we tell carriers to ask one question of any dispatch service: do you run trucks of your own? A desk that pays its own fuel bill learned net-per-day math the expensive way. Ours did — and it’s the math behind our carrier-run dispatch desk.
